Sorption of Trace Constituents from Aqueous Solutions onto Secondary Minerals

چکیده
-Well-characterized American Petroleum Institute clay standards, source clays from The Clay Minerals Society, and other secondary minerals were used to determine the effects of U concentration, temperature, and solution composition on U-sorption properties. Uranium concentrations ranged from about 1.00 x 10 -4 M to 4.00 x 10 7 M, temperatures from 5 ~ to 65~ and solution compositions containing 0.01 M NaCl and 0.01 M NaHCO3. Silica gel efficiently sorbed uranyl carbonate anion complexes. The higher cation-exchange capacity materials most readily sorbed uranyl ions from the 0.01 M NaCl solution. Temperature increases tended to affect uranyl ion sorption adversely except when the U was present as carbonate complexes. Noncrystalline ferric oxyhydroxides sorbed uranyl ions much more efficiently than any of the secondary crystalline minerals studied. A method for accurately extrapolating U-sorption efficiencies between experimental points based on the Freundlich equation is presented. Key Words--Cation exchange, Clinoptilolite, Freundlich isotherm, Glauconite, lllite, Montmorillonite, Opal, Sorption, Uranium.

متن کاملSorption of Hydrophobic Organic Compounds on Natural Sorbents and Organoclays from Aqueous and Non-Aqueous Solutions: A Mini-Review
Renewed focus on the sorption of hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs) onto mineral surfaces and soil components is required due to the increased and wider range of organic pollutants being released into the environment. This mini-review examines the possibility of the contribution and mechanism of HOC sorption onto clay mineral sorbents such as kaolinite, and soil organic matter and the possibl...

متن کاملRemoval of Strontium Ions by Synthetic Nano Sodalite Zeolite from Aqueous Solution
In this research, the zeolite sodalite, as an inorganic ion exchange material, was chemically produced in the template-free synthesis and evaluated in order to facilitate the sorption of strontium ions from aqueous solutions in batch operations onto acid treated zeolite with dilute H2SO4 solutions. The following indicates what the batch experiments included: a sorbent amount of 0.25 g in 100 mL...
متن کاملContribution of Soluble Minerals in Biochar to Pb Adsorption in Aqueous Solutions
Biochar is widely used as an adsorbent to remove heavy metals from aqueous solutions. To investigate the contribution of soluble minerals (mainly anions) to Pb2+ removal in solution, wheat straw biochar was washed with deionized water to remove soluble minerals. Batch adsorption was conducted using washed biochar (WBC) and unwashed biochar (BC) to absorb Pb2+. After washing, the pH and ash cont...
